Such An Sad Place
Most of the structures in Adak are abandoned, with boarded-up doors, smashed in windows (weather or vandalism), and unhappy No Trespassing signs. In a village of 150 with housing for several thousand, it is the definition of a ghost town.
Bering Hill (shown in these and following photos) must have been crawling with people in its prime, since it held the barracks (not family housing), rec center, galley, prison, a movie theater, pool, gym, bar with dance floor, several restaurants, library, and news station. We toured it with Chris and Mami but can only share the photos without classified graffiti.
We think John Mercado said it best on September 20, 2008: abandoned and ravaged as it has been, it truly is, "Such an sad place."
