The Cheese Situation

We brought a 5 lb. block of sharp cheddar cheese from Anchorage to Akutan on the plane, but two weeks was plenty of time to finish it off. We had noticed at the McGlashan Grocery (open 12-4) the slim pickings of refrigerated food (no produce whatsoever--not even frozen), especially the one block of cheese left for the taking. Jim kept saying, "No, we're going to make ours last until the end," and everytime we went to the grocery, the block of Tillamook was still there. After a night of having only the most minimal number of crumbles atop our Black Beans & Rice, Sarah took matters into her own hands. During lunch the next day, she walked alone to McGlashan's and bought that block of cheese. She knew Jim would be happy when he saw it, which he was. A couple of days ago, our co-worker, Lorraine heard us mentioning the cheese, and she asserted rather competitively, "You are the ones who bought the cheese? I was planning to buy it, but by the time I got there, it was already gone!" She went on to complain with envy of her cheeseless dinners. We had to tell her, "Lorraine, there just isn't enough cheese in this town for the two of us." This was all last week, and there still isn't any more cheese at the store. We're glad we got in early on that.
